Montana Gun Laws & Firearms Safety Practice Exam 2026 – All-in-One Comprehensive Study Guide for Exam Success

In Montana, the ownership of firearms, including fully automatic machine guns, short-barreled rifles, and short-barreled shotguns, is subject to specific regulations rather than a blanket prohibition. As long as individuals comply with federal laws and regulations regarding these types of firearms, they can legally own them in the state.

Fully automatic machine guns are regulated under the National Firearms Act, which requires registration and certain conditions for ownership. Similarly, short-barreled rifles and shotguns are also regulated under the same act, necessitating registration and compliance with federal laws. As such, none of these firearm categories are inherently illegal to own in Montana, provided that the appropriate legal requirements are met.

Therefore, the correct answer highlights that there are no outright prohibitions on these firearm types under Montana law when federal guidelines are followed, allowing for their legal ownership.
